Last year, we created a Diversity and Inclusion Committee responsible for reviewing and monitoring the activities and practices that promote diversity, equal opportunity, and fair treatment for employees of Essex. Over the past year, we’ve expanded the conversation surrounding diversity and inclusion. We appreciate your continued engagement and interest as we explore what it means to be inclusive and show diversity in the workplace.

We’re excited to continue this initiative and share our upcoming DEI schedule for the remainder of 2021. From July to December, we have three new DEI classes for you to join. Each class has two dates for you to choose from based on your schedule and availability.

MICROAGGRESSIONS WEBINAR
Microaggressions are everyday verbal and nonverbal slights, snubs, or insults, which can either be intentional or unintentional. These actions communicate negative or hostile messages that are based solely on the recipient’s perceived marginalized group membership. In this session, we’ll cover what microaggressions are, how they manifest, and how we can respond to them.

ALLYSHIP WEBINAR
In today’s world, it’s not enough to be a bystander– we must move to learning how to understand and act as an ally. This workshop covers a discussion of how to act as an ally in the workplace. We review best practices, terminology related to power and privilege, and specific allyship tools and skills. The workshop includes interactive discussions on real-life scenarios.

INTERSECTIONALITY WEBINAR
A framework coined by law professor Kimberlé Crenshaw, the term intersectionality highlights the overlap in identities (race, class, gender, etc.) in order to better understand the complexities of discrimination. In this session, we will dive into what intersectionality means, while examining its relationship to current systems of oppression. We will also start to explore the impact of power, privilege, and marginalization in everyday life.
