COVID-19 SCSL Time-Off Changes

As you know, Essex associates are provided up to eight (8) hours of paid time off to use for the purpose of receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. If you experience adverse side effects from the vaccine, you will now be able to use your Special Circumstances Sick Leave (SCSL) hours to account for any unplanned time off.

To streamline this process and comply with recent regulation changes:
  • The “Vaccine Time Off” code will no longer be available in the drop-down menu under “type” when submitting your time-off request.
  • Time off requests for COVID-19 vaccine appointments or unplanned sick time as a result of the vaccine should be submitted using the new “Special Circumstances Sick Leave” option in the “type” drop-down menu.
  • Once you select this option, you will be asked to identify a purpose for using your SCSL time off for one of the following reasons:
    • Family illness
    • Physician-directed quarantine
    • School closure/childcare
    • Self-illness
    • Vaccine
Proof of vaccination will still be required by your manager to utilize SCSL time off in relation to receiving your vaccine.

SCSL balances for all associates were previously reset to 80 hours as of January 1, 2021. Associates who previously used their allocated SCSL hours for time off unrelated to the COVID-19 vaccination will be provided with a minimum of (8) hours of paid time off.
