On behalf of Mike Schall and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee, we are pleased to announce the release of Essex's 2019 CSR Report. This report is an update from last year's report and contains an overview of our many Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) accomplishments through 2019. Over the course of the year, we made substantial progress in implementing ESG mandates, while further building and refining the principles that define ESG at Essex and establishing a foundation for future opportunities. I am proud of our accomplishments and happy to share we are on track to meet our Essex 2022 goals.

Some Key accomplishments in 2019 include:

• Updated our mission statement to "Creating Quality Communities in Premier Locations"
• Digital transformation to improve resident experience and reduce manual workflow and paper usage
• Provided over 36,000 hours of training to our associates
• Implemented a Diversity & Inclusion Committee to strengthen and further promote diversity as we have one of the most diverse workforces among our peers
• Donated over 80,000 meals to fight hunger and $47,000 in charitable contributions 
• Generated 5,000 MWh of renewable energy and reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 8%, equivalent to removing 760 vehicles from circulation
• Being the only apartment REIT in the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index
