Most computer users don't take full advantage of the computer mouse. Here are some tips and trick that will help you achieve the full potential of your mouse and increase your overall efficiency and productivity. These tips work with Microsoft Windows Applications.

Shift Key + Mouse Click
To highlight a large body of text, click at the beginning of the text with your mouse, hold down the shift key, then click where you want your highlight to end.

Alt Key + Mouse
Selectively highlight text by holding down the Alt key, then hold down the left mouse key. Dragging the mouse allows you to highlight text. This can be useful when the text you are trying to capture is in a column.

Select with Double or Triple Click
Select any word by double-clicking it. To highlight a whole paragraph, click the mouse button three times on any word.

Mouse Scroll Wheel Tips
Everyone is familiar with using the mouse wheel to scroll up and down a page. However, the mouse wheel can do much more:

  • Use the mouse as a button. Pressing down on the wheel makes the wheel act as a third mouse button. The button can be used to open a web page in a tab by clicking the wheel on any link.
  • Zoom in and out on a webpage, Word document, or Excel spreadsheet by holding down the Ctrl key and scrolling up and down to zoom in and out.
  • Hold down the Shift key and scroll down in most Internet browsers to go back to the previous webpage.
