Essex Announces Craig K. Zimmerman Retirement; Expanded Roles for Adam Berry and John Burkart

On September 5, 2019, Essex announced the planned retirement of Craig K. Zimmerman, Executive Vice President and Co-Chief Investment Officer, effective December 31, 2019. We are sincerely grateful to Craig for his more than 34 years of service and the indelible mark that he has left on our company.

"Craig has been a significant contributor to the growth of the Company's portfolio, and also instrumental in the strategic direction of the Company. He exemplifies its culture of achievement, which includes training and mentoring other focused and capable investment executives," shared Michael Schall, President and CEO. "On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Essex team, we thank Craig for his many years of exceptional service."

Adam W. Berry, currently Co-Chief Investment Officer, will succeed Craig as Chief Investment Officer effective at the transition date. Adam joined the company in 2003 and has held various positions including leading our redevelopment and property dispositions programs and working closely with Craig on development activities. 

"Adam has been integral to our Investment team over the past 16 years. I am confident that Adam has been well prepared for his expanded role and that he will continue to successfully execute our strategy and create long term value for our shareholders," commented Michael.

In addition, Essex announced that John F. Burkart has been named Chief Operating Officer. John has served as our Senior Executive Vice President since 2015, overseeing multiple divisions including Operations, Asset & Portfolio Management, Redevelopment & Capital Maintenance, Research, and Information Technology. He served as the Executive Vice President of Asset Management from 2011 to 2015.

"Throughout his tenure, John has demonstrated strong leadership skills that have been instrumental in driving the Company's growth and success. He has created a strong operating and asset management platform and guided the Company through many key milestones over his 23 years of service. I am grateful for his contributions and look forward to continuing to work with him as we seek to continue our strong track record of success," concluded Michael.
