After an emergency occurred over the holiday weekend, the Avondale team came together to deliver extraordinary service to their residents.

At approximately 10 a.m. on Christmas Eve, the main water supply for the entire community (8 buildings, 446 units) shut down when a water pipe broke, also flooding the parking lot.

The team's top concern was restoring the water supply, and ensuring the residents had clean drinking water in the meantime. Community Manager Petra Shauger and Sr. Maintenance Supervisor Gene Groce were both two hours away when the incident happened, but they rushed to the property to coordinate on-site efforts and provide support to the residents.

As the plumbing company excavated through dirt to fix the pipe on Christmas Eve, RPM Janice Seltzer and her fiancé trekked to Costco to purchase 588 gallons of water to hand out to residents. To transport the water from Costco to the community, they rented a U-Haul. Upon arriving on site, Gene along with Maintenance Technician Victor Islas and Leasing Specialist Alejandro Batalla carted all the water into the leasing center, which was no easy task given the mass quantity.

As of Christmas morning, the water supply still had not been fixed. It turned out that the plumbing company needed a special part that they didn’t have and they couldn't get any vendor to answer a phone or work on Christmas. Joe Yokofich and Mike Barkley from the CMS department stepped in to save the day. They called in a personal favor and were able to get a local store to open to purchase the necessary part.

Meanwhile, the on-site team continued caring for residents by obtaining an additional 3400 gallons of water and providing regular status updates throughout the day. The Leasing Staff, including Elizabeth Rosas and Alejandro Batalla, kept the residents informed of the latest progress. They even offered to reimburse residents $200 per night for hotel stays (about 20 residents took the offer).

At 4:30 p.m. on Christmas Day, the water pipe was fixed!

Residents visited the office the following day to express their gratitude to the team for working so diligently through the holiday. So many of them thanked the staff for all their hard work to restore the water.

“I couldn’t be with my family on Christmas,” said Community Manager Petra Shauger, “but at least I could be here with my other family.”

Thank you, Avondale team, for going above and beyond your call of duty.
